Ratification now went to the House, where votes pro and anti were neck and neck. But by Monday night Seth Walker crowed to reporters, “We’ve got ’em whipped to a frazzle. We have ratification beaten, that is all there is to it.”

Many of those camped out in Memphis, like Anti powerhouse Josephine Pearson, were Tennessee natives, though not all Tennessee women were against suffrage by a long shot. Seated not far from Pearson in the gallery was fellow native daughter Sue Shelton White, a yellow rose fixed alongside the prison-door pin she always wore. White was the only Tennessee woman ever jailed for suffrage. She’d been a Silent Sentinel, one of those sentenced to Occoquan Workhouse. Alice Paul’s general on the ground in Nashville, White led the radical suffrage charge. Though partly the result of lack of funds, having White stand in for Paul proved wise. No one could accuse White of carpetbagging. She was as homegrown a fighter as any Tennessee Volunteer.

White sat a little taller on the hard gallery chair and slowly fanned herself with the scorecard she had on hand to tally votes as they were called. This waiting game was tougher than any hunger strike.
